PSR leaders decry efforts to block the EPA from regulating carbon
pollution

PSR Executive Director Dr. Peter Wilk and Director of Environment and
Health Programs Kristen Welker-Hood, ScD MSN RN, spoke at a
Congressional press briefing on January 21, 2010 hosted by Senator
Barbara Boxer (CA), supporting EPA authority. Wilk and Welker-Hood
denounced the efforts of Senator Lisa Murkowski (AK) to formally
disapprove of the scientific findings of the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency, finalized in December 2009, that carbon pollution
endangers public health. Dr. Wilk stated that "this brazen attempt to
block EPA authority to implement life-saving regulations is
unacceptable."

Seizing the Moment

At the end of his State of the Union address, President Obama
declared:  "We don't quit.  I don't quit.
Let's seize this moment -- to start anew, to carry the dream
forward...."

At the same time, the recent election in Massachusetts and the Supreme
Court decision opening the door to a flood of corporate campaign
contributions make clear that we can take nothing for granted in 2010.
In the wake of those events, some in Congress, some advising the
President, and many pundits are urging caution and retreat from bold
efforts to address the grave threats posed by climate change and
nuclear weapons. PSR believes that a totally different response is
called for.

This year calls for a deeper level of engagement and determination
from all of us. PSR's role is more important than ever in efforts to:

preserve EPA authority to regulate greenhouse gas pollution

advocate for the strongest possible climate and energy
legislation
*
reduce toxic chemical exposures through public education and
stronger regulation

We need your help to move this critical agenda forward.

Take Action

~ Seek support from your congressional representation to support a
strong climate bill to cap carbon emissions and promote and fund
clean, safe, renewable energy alternatives.

~ Call on your state and federal decision makers to protect children,
families, workers and other vulnerable populations from toxic chemical
policies and a comprehensive reform to the Toxic Substances Control
Act.
